Grades 6-10

At Finland International School, we are committed to providing an enriching and supportive learning environment for your child. Our MYP* for Grades 6 and 7 is designed to foster academic excellence, personal growth, and global citizenship. We believe in the potential of every student and are dedicated to helping them thrive as learners and individuals.

Phenomenon-Based Learning

Phenomenon-based learning is a hallmark of Finnish education. This approach encourages students to explore real-world phenomena through interdisciplinary units, integrating knowledge and skills from multiple subjects. Students engage in collaborative projects that promote deeper understanding and practical application of concepts.

Interdisciplinary Units

Interdisciplinary units combine subject areas to create meaningful and cohesive learning experiences. These units encourage students to see connections between different fields of knowledge and understand the relevance of their learning in real-world contexts.

Transversal Competences

Transversal competences in the FIS Middle Years Program* refers to a set of skills and abilities that are not limited to a specific subject or domain but can be applied across various areas of learning and life. These competences are often considered essential for a student’s holistic development and future success. Transversal competences like problem-solving are valuable because they empower students to adapt and excel in diverse situations, both inside and outside the classroom.

Personalised learning plans are crafted for each student based on their best interests and needs. These plans focus on pedagogical activities, and the goals derived from them influence group activities, learning spaces, and overall operational culture. Plans are created after a student starts the FIS Middle Years Program* and are reviewed in the beginning of term 2, or if needed, more often. The review’s focus is to accommodate the student’s evolving needs.

Subject Groups

IBO* mandated subject groups serve as guiding frameworks for educators to curate and deliver pedagogically rich activities that promote holistic development and academic excellence.

By exploring these subject groups, teachers collaborate with students in planning and executing a myriad of engaging learning experiences, thereby supporting their journeys in becoming active inquirers and fostering a love for learning.
